For those looking for more of a challenge, this hike up to the summit of Rumiñahui Central offers great views of El Corazón, Cayambe, Antisana, Los Illinizas, Sincholagua and Cotopaxi. Located in the Cotopaxi National Park, the route to this extinct volcano begins near the shores of Lake Limpiopungo, before heading through paramo and scree fields to the summit at 4,631m. This is a more challenging climb, requiring a higher level of fitness and confidence for scrambling up the loose rocks near the summit. It is an excellent acclimatisation climb for those looking to tackle one of the Ecuador’s higher peaks.
