For those looking for more of a challenge, this hike up to the summit of Rumiñahui Central offers great views of El Corazón, Cayambe, Antisana, Los Illinizas, Sincholagua and Cotopaxi.

Located in the Cotopaxi National Park, the route to this extinct volcano begins near the shores of Lake Limpiopungo, before heading through paramo and scree fields to the summit at 4,631m. This is a more challenging climb, requiring a higher level of fitness and confidence for scrambling up the loose rocks near the summit. It is an excellent acclimatisation climb for those looking to tackle one of the Ecuador’s higher peaks.

We will depart from The Secret Garden Cotopaxi around 7.15am, returning by about 2pm. We will drive through the national park until Limpiopungo Lake, at approximately 3,850 metres, where the trek starts. We will hike up to the central peak of Rumiñahui, which is at 4,631 metres above sea level. The hike includes some steeper, more challenging sections and some easier, flatter sections. The last part involves scrambling up loose rocks to reach the summit. We then trek back down to the parking area and drive back to the hostel for a late lunch. $50pp
